Photograph of shingles, an infection caused by Varicella-Zoster virus (a member of the Herpesvirus group), showing a group of distinctive vesicular blisters on a finger. Shingles (also called zoster) is most commonly confined to adults. Its symptoms include fever and severe pain in the region of one or more nerve roots. Shingles is not transmissible as such, but close contacts (especially children) may develop the related infection, chickenpox.
