Alert meerkat, Suricata suricatta, keeps a lookout from a dead tree. This mongoose is watching for predators, especially vultures. The meerkat lives in colonies and feeds during the day, mainly on insects. A shrill warning cry will send the colony fleeing to its underground burrows. It is found in southern Africa. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, South Africa.
